Art in Medicine (AiM) is a Canadian not-for-profit organization that uses the arts and humanities to strengthen the essential skills of clinical practice.

As medicine becomes increasingly shaped by technology, AiM explores how the arts and humanities can strengthen the qualities that remain central to patient care. Through art analysis, narrative reflection, and cultural engagement, AiM helps healthcare professionals enhance their observational and compassionate intelligence, while deepening their understanding of patients and themselves.

What can I expect from this Art in Medicine taster session?

If you’re curious about the role of the arts and humanities in healthcare and wondering how they can enhance clinical practice, this welcoming 90-minute session is the perfect place to start.

In this interactive online session, you will:

• Review the evidence behind art and art analysis in medical training and practice.
• Experience guided art observation exercises.
• Learn how art and narrative can strengthen observation, interpretation, and compassion.
• Be introduced to the Art in Medicine frameworks OBSERVE and SCALPEL-FIVE.
• Explore a brief case study on Dante and its relevance to medicine

Who is this session for?

• Are looking for new approaches to reflection and professional development.
• Want to strengthen their observational and interpretive skills.
• Are interested in learning more about Art in Medicine’s educational programs.

No prior knowledge of art, literature, or art history is required.

About Nandini

Dr. Nandini Gupta is an advanced adult heart failure cardiologist practicing in Toronto, Canada. She is the Founder & CEO of Art in Medicine (AiM). Dr. Gupta also holds a Certificate of Professional Achievement in Narrative Medicine from Columbia University. She is currently completing an online course in Italian Renaissance Art at the University of Oxford.

This is a new initiative and depending on feedback may open the door for additional sessions in the future and opportunities to engage further with Art in Medicine via their on line educational programmes and symposium which is due to take place in London in September 2027.
