Recruit with confidence: practical recruitment skills for managers in General Practice
Recruitment is one of the most important – and time-consuming – responsibilities for managers in general practice. Get it right, and you build a stronger, more capable team. Get it wrong, and you risk wasted time, costs, and disruption.
This practical, two-part course is designed specifically for those managing recruitment in GP surgeries and primary care settings. Whether you’re new to hiring or want to refresh and sharpen your skills, this training will give you the confidence, tools, and legal knowledge to lead recruitment effectively.

Learning outcomes
Session 1 (3 hours)
- Purpose of recruitment and the recruiter’s role
- Writing an effective job description and person specification
- Creating a strong job advert and advertising the role – where, how?
- Shortlisting candidates for interview – methods, documents, who should be involved.
- The Equality Act 2010, discrimination, and unconscious bias in recruitment
- Using psychometric tests and in tray exercises in recruitment
- Writing great interview questions
Homework: reading CVs of mock candidates and formulating questions based on a mock job description (some of this will be covered above i.e. same job description)
Session 2 (3 hours)
- Discussion on homework, how they found it, what problems they had, any questions.
- Interviewing managers or panels – who and what roles they might play.
- Exercise: preparation required for an interview
- Exercise: Two x 15 minute role play interviews with mock candidates
- Making a conditional job offer and why the wording is important
- Informing unsuccessful applicants and providing feedback
