Performing spirometry in adults & children and/or technical reporting/interpretation.
Suitable for: Clinical practitioners using Spirometry as a diagnosis tool for patients with respiratory conditions.

09:30 – Welcome and introduction
09:45 – Performing spirometry
• Respiratory anatomy & physiology
• Introduction to spirometry and what we are measuring
• Indications for spirometry
• Preparing the equipment: infection control, quality assurance (verification of calibration &
calibration, biological control)
• Patient preparation: pre-test advice, contraindications, demographics & reference values

11:00 – Performing spirometry
• Performing spirometry in line with the ARTP standards- getting a good result
• Technical acceptability and reproducibility
• Spirometry demonstration
• Carrying out reversibility
• Recognising errors in spirometry- group work
• Spirometry Practical (please bring your spirometer, antibacterial antiviral filters & 3L
syringe. If software based, please load this onto a laptop to bring)
12:30 – Lunch
13:15 – Technical reporting/Interpretation of spirometry
• Checking spirometry is fit for interpretation
• Top 10, now revised top 7 Tips to interpret methodically
• Interpreting the graphs & the numbers
• Z-scores and the LLN
• Recognising spirometry patterns: normal, obstruction, restriction, combined
• Pathology that may cause the above patterns
14:30 – Coffee
14:45 – Interpretation of spirometry
• Identifying significant reversibility & its relevance
• Considering the findings in the context of the patient to support a diagnosis
• Writing a useful report
• Practical interpretation- case study based
16:30 – Close
