Physician Associate Ambassador in Primary Care – 2024/25

There is a new and exciting opportunity for a primary care Physician Associate to become a Physician Associate Ambassador for primary care across the south west region.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, driven and committed primary care physician associate in the south west to join the ambassador team to develop the workforce, engage with key stakeholders and drive the profession forward, with a particular focus in primary care.

NHS England remain committed to the development of the Physician Associate (PA) profession and the delivery of its Long-Term Workforce Plan (LTWP) commitments. The continued support of the PA Ambassador programme will ensure that there is sufficient workforce leadership across England to represent the interests, development and deployment of the PA profession for handling the next phase of implementing PA expansion.

Evaluation (including economic) evidence (2021) suggests that these posts also offer suitably experienced PAs an opportunity to contribute to the system transformation agenda and, through working within a multi-professional workforce, the opportunity to develop and advance medical associate professions (MAPs).

Since 2022, funding for the PA ambassador role has been secured through regional investment. Following discussions with NHSE colleagues and stakeholders, national funding is now being provided for 24/25 across all seven regions.

The PA Ambassador role:

• Combines both operational and strategic working; developing ‘champions’ for the PA profession and enabling new ways of working. This includes the development of recruitment and retention strategies to support the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan commitments to expand enhanced, advanced and associate positions, including physician associates.

• Allows post-holders the opportunity to work as an interface role across health economies; with potential to assist integration of PAs within the multi-professional clinical workforce.

• Allows post-holders to access support of both their host organisation and NHS England in connecting service providers and commissioners, system wide.

• Allows PAs to work on key workforce development projects.

• Is a unique career opportunity for an experienced PA to develop their profession.

Ambassadors are experienced PAs who are released from their clinical duties (0.3 WTE) over a fixed-term contract, to enable system-wide development and integration of the PA profession. Without a workforce lead to represent their interests, there is a risk that this emerging profession will not be properly supported, developed and deployed through STP / ICS and local workforce strategies.

We would like to invite expressions of interest from NHS organisations wishing to support the recruitment and development of PA Ambassadors. NHS England will commit to provide investment for the role and with contracting being confirmed between NHSE and the lead employer prior to commencement.

We will be aiming to recruit a maximum of 1 x 0.3 WTE posts across the south west geography and would encourage you to register your interest as soon as possible by completing and submitting the form attached to the job description to – no later than 09:00 on 17th May 2024.

Interviews to be held on 22nd of May 2024
