By the end of this training programme you will have an understanding of what it is like to have dementia. You will have an insight into the possible signs and symptoms and how to recognise them when they come into your surgery and how to do some basic assessments. We will look at possible differential diagnosis including depression. We will look at the problems that your patients experience with answering questions and expressing their needs. I will show you what happens to eyesight and perception and how they contribute to falls and disorientation. We will look at the main causes of agitation including the effects of untreated pain. You will have some understanding of how memory is affected; how they are made, stored, retrieved and lost.
Understand the difficulties people with dementia have with language and communication. Learn how to talk to patients to minimise distress and agitation.
Be able to assess the causes of aggression and agitation.
Look at differential diagnosis including depression.
Recognise environmental factors in the home and surgery that affect people with dementia and how they contribute to falls, disorientation and poor food intake.
Recognise the signs that might lead you to suspect cognitive problems and look at basic assessments.
Briefly look at different types of dementia.
Have insight into memory problems and what happens when dementia develops.

Turn off from the main Derriford Road and turn left into the Main Car Park which is the second turning on the left.
If you let us have your registration number prior to arriving you can just park in the Visitors car park we can register this for you on the system. Or you can also request a parking permit from us to print out and put in your car. You can then just park and make your way down to our building as indicated which is the first building on the left just off the roundabout. If you have not sent in your registration prior to arriving then come to our reception and we will give you a parking permit to put in your car.
When you get to the front door of our building please press 1 then the bell sign and we will buzz you in. Go through the doors to the left of the lift then take the next corridor on your right and go to the reception desk to sign in.
